About This Sector
Hydropower has been part of Kenya's generation backbone for decades, and it remains one of the two pillars, alongside geothermal, that give the national grid its unusually high renewable share. It is also a technology with a real and specific risk that newer entrants sometimes underweight: hydrological variability. A drought year can materially cut generation from even a well-built hydro asset, and that risk has to be underwritten honestly rather than modelled away.
We advise across both ends of the hydropower spectrum, small-scale run-of-river projects that can be developed with a lighter financing footprint, and larger-scale assets that require the kind of multi-year, multi-institution capital stack more typical of Kenya's largest infrastructure. We also work on rehabilitation and upgrade financing for existing hydro assets, often a faster, lower-risk path to added capacity than new-build development, and one that gets less attention than it deserves.
What We Advise On
- Small- and large-scale hydropower feasibility advisory
- Hydrological and seasonal risk assessment
- Rehabilitation and upgrade financing for existing assets
- Structuring around environmental and community considerations
